Not only are manicures fun and relaxing, but wearing nail polish is an easy way to sport the hottest color trends for fall. With one swipe of the brush you can change your nail polish to match your outfit, mood, or occasion.Turquoise and pink were the hottest colors last summer but as the days grow cooler turn to darker colors of moody blues, metallics and nail polish that provide texture such as metallics and crackle.

One of the biggest trend-setting brands in beauty, Chanel, has released their fall 2011 line featuring three shades of metallic polishes. Models at their fall show sported manicures in these edgy shades and soon after the fashion world was budding with excitement. If you've opened any fashion magazine lately, you've probably seen a feature on Peridot (center), a green-tinted gold that gives nails a gleamy, gilded look. Quartz (far left) is a sparkly taupe shade, and Graphite (right) is sooty yet glittery. So whether you're an edgy girl or a sparkle fanatic, Chanel's fall line has something for you.
2) Nude Nails
Backstage at Rodarte, Essie "Fed Up" $8
Although extreme nail art has become widely popular, many runway shows suggested the opposite: a minimal, solid, nude manicure. To flatter and elongate your fingers, try to match the polish to your skin tone. This gives the illusion that your finger nails are a continuation of the skin. For a more noticeable nude, they key is contrast. Fair skinned girls should pick a mocha colored shade with brown undertones, like the polish seen at Rodarte. Those with darker complexions should try a beige with pink undertones, like Essie's "Fed Up." This shade also works for light skinned girls going for the elongating effect.
3) Navy Blue

Navy blue was all over the runways this fall, from eye shadows, to blazers, and more. Now fashionistas are sporting the trend on their nails, too. Get the look with YSL's polish in "La Laque," a deep, inky blue. The moody blue is not quite as harsh as black, and works perfectly as a transition from vibrant warm weather shades to dark cold weather shades.
4) Shades of Denim
Les Jeans de Chanel, $39
Speaking of blue, denim is always a fall must have. Now the shade is a must have for your nails as well. Chanel is releasing a limited edition line for Fashion's Night Out called "Les Jeans de Chanel," inspired by different washes of denim. The shades include "Blue Rebel" (left), a deep, dark wash, "Coco Blue" (center), a light, sky blue, and "Blue Boy" (right), a shiny ocean blue. The collection will be sold exclusively at Chanel Boutiques starting September 8th.
5) Crackle Nails
Katy Perry for OPI, $25 for 5 bottles
The newest thing in nail art: crackle nails. The craze started when Katy Perry hit the red carpet in outrageous nail designs, which led her to collaborate with polish brand OPI. The Katy Perry for OPI collection includes a black polish, which is painted over any of the other four colors. Once dry, the formula "crackles" to reveal the color beneath.
