I got a chance to see an incredible exhibit mounted by the Gagosian Gallery in New York
on Saturday featuring the late works of Monet. Many of these canvases were culled from private
collectors and never before publically displayed. For exzample there was the $20 million dollar Steven Cohen centerpiece. I was awestruck by the colors, the textures and the gestural marks. They were stunning works. I also loved this quote by Monet that was in the exhibition catalogue:
The instantaneity of Monet, far from being passive, requires an unusual power of generalization, of abstraction… Monet declares: here is nature, not as you or I habitually see it, but as you are able to see it, not in this or that particular effect but in others like it. The vision I propose to you is superior; my painting will change your reality.
--Michel Butor, 1962
These paintings I did are small and intimate inspirations created on canvas
in watercolor. They do not require framing to display in your home
and if framed, do not need to be displayed under glass allowing you to enjoy
the full complexity of the watercolor.
