Artistically, what interests me about these two pieces are the little bits
of colors that a re here and there that sing notes...like the streak of yellow against the leg the little bits of fire engine red that play against the moody and enchanting blues. The little bits of color tease the eye and make you want to keep looking at the painting longer so it will reveal its secrets to you.

I also like the way in the second nude with the feet up the figure almost looks like a snail.

This is an amazing painting done with a live model from life. The painting
was worked in pastel and charcoal on an acrylic toned canvas. Then
layers of oil paint were worked into the chalk. The result is a dynamic and lively
abstract nude. The sides on this piece are painted black.

Abstract ART OIL Painting Female Nude Original by Miriam Schulman

"Uncooked" 16x20" Original Oil Painting by Miriam Schulman

Thanks to everyone who took the time to write to me personally
after my last post. I have been very active in my studio and am waiting for more oil paintings

to dry before I list them on my website. Some are nudes and some are
paintings of other subjects that I have reinvented with a new color palette.

Nude Female Abstract Art---Oil Painting on Canvas

SOLD
"Lost in Bani" Title inspired by Bani in the Dominican Republic...just finished
reading a Junot Diaz book....absolutely wonderful.

In defense of painting in this "new" style....
Someone on the art& artist board wrote about my work:
Schulman, have you changed your medium? I thought you were doing beautiful and detailed watercolors that seemed to sparkle and zing.

Your latest works seem very different to me. Rougher, coarser, less facial definitions making the models seem less personable and more as a thing, as if you are taking out some aggressions on the canvas. Before, even if there was no face, the lines showed more delicacy as if there was caring about the body, the person in the body.

I'm not sure why it unsettles me so much to see such a different style from you. You are certainly entitled to create any art your see fit. And I'm in no way implying that there's anything wrong with your new art. The poses, the colors, etc., it's all cool. It's just that what I see worries me about your state of being in your soul. Are you doing ok?

my response:
It is interesting your emotional response to the abstract nudes.
They are unromantic observations of my models...these paintings are drawn from live models, real women, and my depictions of them on canvas are influenced by their psyches...
not flattering them but portraying them as complex human beings
regardless of race, creed, class or age. These canvas paintings
heighten the triangulated tensions in figurative work: figure -space-surface...line-brushwork-color....painter-sitter-viewer....biography-autobiography-history

And more:
I do believe it is true that when working in the watercolor medium I DO tend to romanticize my figures both male and female and idealize them. Perhaps it is because of the flow of the water and paint on paper and working with a quieter medium. As for my soul...I don;t see how can one create without emotional turbulence, but that is just me. Sometimes my art is the result on calming that turbulence down through tranquil expressions...these canvases have revved that up.
16x20" "Hallows"SOLD!
This body of work was begun in October 2008. Here I had asked the model to pose wearing a long black wig.

Abstract Nude Art --- Oil Paintings on Canvas

The three nudes in this blog are part of a large series ( about 10 paintings)
that I have been working on. They were painted directly on the canvas
using a live model. The line work is very solid and linear with abstract modeling
and cubist shapes. I have recently become aware of the art of Alice Neel.
Her body of work is being shown right now at a gallery in Chelsea.

I haven't been to the show yet but I am looking forward to seeing her show and being inspired by the art. She was a prominent bohemian and pioneering woman artist in the mid 20th century who is best known for her portraits and nudes. Sound familiar?

As always you can click on the links to look at the listings of my art on my website or take your chances bidding on them on eBay.

Large Abstract Watercolors on Canvas and Paper

Here are some of the latest watercolors listed on my website
www.MiriamSchulmanStudio.com

This tulip painting is done on watercolor canvas. I love this techniques because it allows my collectors to display without framing, but they can also frame it without glass.
This advantage is more cost effective and also shows off the artwork better since there is no glare from glass on the surface. I also love the vibrancy the paint retains on the canvas surface.

Tulip Ta Da, Watercolor Abstract on Canvas 18x24 - SOLD

This watercolor isn't exactly new, but I was dissatisfied with the photographs I had. I rephotographed it to its best advanatage. You can see close up details of it on my website.
It is a large abstract watercolor on paper. The edges have been taped to leave a white border all around. It would stunning in a floated frame. I did a lot of experimentation with water and masking fluid to create celestial effects in the background. There were two purple rose paintings.
The other one in the series recently sold.
